How to Start Your Own Stand-Up Comedy Show: A Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Find a Venue
Potential locations: bars, restaurants, clubs, coffee shops, backyard spaces, dance halls, theaters, back alleys. Check noise ordinances and potential licensing requirements for pop-up shows.
Assess venue layout and optimize space for a professional setup.
Ensure venue agreement on hosting a comedy show.
Step 2: Optimize Your Space for a Comedy Show
Seating: Arrange chairs theater-style, facing the stage, in a compact setup for an intimate atmosphere.
Lighting: Dim or adjust lighting to focus on the stage, ensuring pathways are clear of trip hazards. A spotlight to illuminate the stage is ideal.
Stage Placement: Ideally place the stage away from high-traffic areas, on a back wall, and ensure it has a backdrop. Try to set the stage away from the entrance, bar area, and bathroom. Ideally audience members dont have to walk past the stage to use the bathroom or to grab a drink. Achieving this may require some rearranging of the standard room set up. Rearranging the room layout is not required, but makes a massive difference in the flow and feel of the show. The comedian will also have an easier time captivating the audience when they are all facing in one direction.
Audio Setup: Check if the venue has a built-in PA system; if not, plan to bring a speaker, microphone, and necessary cables.
Step 3: Add Live Music to Your Show
Connect with local musicians to open or close the event.
Consider live music to create a fuller experience.
Ensure musicians have the necessary sound setup.
Step 4: Book Your Talent
Find comedians through local networks, open mics, or directories.
Secure an MC to keep the energy flowing.
Use Dose of Laughter’s comedian directory if available in your area.
Attend local open mics to scout talent and book them on your show.

Step 5: Purchase Necessary Equipment
Microphone: Standard dynamic microphone.
Mic Stand: Adjustable stand for different performers.
Speakers: At least one 10-inch powered speaker; two recommended.
XLR Cables: Ensure proper length for venue setup.
Speaker Stand: Adjustable stand for speaker placement.
Spotlight: Basic or professional lighting option.
Extension Cords & Power Strips: For easy connectivity.
Stool: Optional but recommended for performers.
Backdrop: Optional. Recommend for a more professional look depending on the look of the room.
Step 6: Create a Marketing Plan
Digital Advertising: Utilize social media ads.
Email Marketing: Use platforms like Mailchimp or Eventbrite’s integrated email marketing.
Physical Flyers: Distribute at local businesses and high-traffic areas.
Create a QR code link people could scan to buy tickets.
Find local comedians that will help promote and pass out flyers in exchange for a spot on the show.
Step 7: Set Up Your Ticketing System
Use Eventbrite or other platforms for seamless ticket sales.
Consider offering early-bird pricing or group discounts.
